Bugler
A blend of Turkish, Virginia and Burley from Lane LTD. A clean, short stranded medium cut tobacco. Bugler is an old brand with high visibility. My preference is PS Turkish Export (no Burley)... The 'Gold' smokes nice but I have a hard time getting past the fruity American smell. Original/blue and Gold/yellow blends. Overpriced @ ~$27lb.

This was the second SYO tobacco I tried, the first was Top. I almost abandoned the whole thing after the Top but ended up trying the Bugler too. I'm glad I did. While you can get better smokes from D&R, and cheaper too, Bugler has a good taste, its sweet and a bit heavy on inhale. But it was good enough to blow premades away. I ll probably buy it in the future as its on sale locally in MD, its no WP/RB/2X, but it ll do in a pinch. Preferred blend of the inmate, Bugler.... pricey but good. (13.00 a 6 oz. can locally).

Got a desire for a snack and went to the grocery. Came home with a pouch of Bugler, and a pouch of Five Brothers Smoking Tobacco.

Bugler was the tobacco I used first when I went from Camels to RYO. Back then, I thought Bugler was pretty decent (early 90's), even though it needed to be cleaned before smoking and I could even taste the evasive Turkish element. I generally buy my tobacco in cans when available, but thought I'd do a pouch this time.
The new pouches really help to keep in the freshness, and I didn't notice anything about Bugler's scent that sent up any flags. I should mention that I also bought pack of Joker 1.0's; since I don't care for Bugler papers much. The Jokers seem to be one of the most neutral papers I have used over the years, and I don't mind the opaqueness. I believe the've changed something in the recipe', because this Bugler pouch tobacco seems to be better! I wonder if Bugler is as good in the can now too? It's smoother than I remember; with no throat irritation and a more pleasant aftertaste than I remember.
The pouch tobacco is much cleaner than what's in the can for sure! No serious sticks, stems, or other debris in my pouch. Next, I injected some Silver Tip tubes, which made for an even smother smoke. I do know however that if you let B dry out too much it will get harsh no matter what you smoke it with! These new sealed pouches do make a lot of difference, to be sure. Even though I have about 5 lbs of various D&R and PS tobaccos, I picked a pouch of Bugler today. I ve always liked canned Bugler and was curious about the pouched version w/ so many posts lately. Im glad I did, no fruity smell at all. Perfect for stuffing right out of the pouch. It could be my imagination but I think I even taste turkish. This cant be same as the tinned variety. Since this is available locally I wouldnt hesitate to buy in a pinch. Pretty decent smoke.

I like Bugler, not a bad flavor, has a nice zing to it. Relatively smooth, but potent. Tobacco has a nice smell to it when pouch is opened. Kinda fruity. Definitely flavored. And there is really only a hint of Turkish flavor. But overall, when rolled, Bugler has a sort of dusty flavor to it, even when properly hydrated.

And wow, does this stuff ever rip up one's throat. I smoked 10 of them one evening and went to bed, woke up and my throat was on fire. Literally felt like I had a bad sore throat. Drank three cups of tea with hiney and that took care of it. I can tell the next day even after smoking one of these. And when rolled losely, it takes three days for my throat to recover.
Not a bad smoke at all really, and I only smoke on the weekends, but I'm not sure I could smoke this everyday. The flavor is definitely old school, which I like - tangy, but not buttery or rich, but with that dusty flavor too. Ick. And the quality of the papers leaves something to be desired. I have gotten some that just wouldn't stick.
But I'll definitely go back to Bugler now and then. Can't comment what it's like in a tube.

Fruity? I though BG smelled like chocolate. I had a friend stick his nose in the bag and he looked up and said "chocolate" like he was half guessing what I thought about it and what he thought it smelled like. So I guess it smells like chocolate.

that includes Dave L,,,,,,HOWEVER, one of the forum members has some pretty in-depth experience with Bugler, and they apparently change recipes now and then....maybe they're experimenting with the Gold...
side-note: some of the drug stores here have decided that "Gold" means more valuable, and charge ridiculous prices for a pouch

I have bought a pouch or two of Bugler, but I just can’t get in to it. I’m not saying Bugler is bad, but there are better quality tobaccos which sell for a similar or lower price. I’ve have also found the Bugler papers to be terrible quality, half the time the paper won’t stick. Despite all this I’ll take a Bugler over a premade any day.

Mike, Everyone has their own taste preferences. A lot of people don't care for Bugler, Personally, I do. But, there are tons of other flavors out there. I experiment a lot with different brands and I've just barely touched what is out there.

Me & Bugler go way back & Bugler is what I'm smoking at the moment. I got to participate in a test for new replacement blends for Bugler a few months back. If they wind up replacing it with the first blend they sent me, I'll never buy Bugler again. (I'll never forget the horrible taste.) The blend in the new cans was already out at that time and I really hope they don't surprise me with any more changes but it looks like they will if phone correspondence is anything to go on.

I've griped about their new papers before and I'll say it again how much I dislike them and sorely miss the old. At a time they'd just began releasing the fun packs with riddles, word finds, and brainteasers galore they switched to "EZ Roll". Sure, you might get a few duds in the old packs but they were so much easier to manage. I'm sure they'll never change it back because they're acting on complaints about the old packs. These new packs of paper affect my decision to buy Bugler to the point I might just spring the extra for McClintock & use the Gizehs I've got on hand next time I'm out for tobacco.

As long as they don't switch to the #1 taste test sampler, I'll always buy Bugler, but I'll just have to live with the crappy papers. The thing that makes it a drag though is that Bugler will alway be a nonfilter blend for me as I don't like it tubed. (Bugler tubes, on the other hand, are probably my favorite)
I really liked Bugler Gold from the one can I've tried. It is a blend that is good tubed or rolled and I look forward to smoking more of it.

I moved away from Bugler and now If I don't stop buying $2 pouches soon I will be getting mine from Scott.
To survive with that package there must be some good tobacco in there! You can always blend it to the left, or blend it to the right

I ran out of my usual tobacco this week and was unable to get to the tobacco store so I bought a can of Bugler at the local gas station. Other than having to dry it out for two days before I could make a decent stick I have no problems with Bugler. It is expensive, but, man, six ounces seems to last a long time.

Locally, It's $6.99 to $7.99 a can. Not too bad. Cheaper than a lot of other brands.

I went to Safeway today and bought a pouch of Bugler to smoke while I wait for my Lookout to be delivered. I noticed lots of change since I bought my last pouch. The pouch I bought had .65 ounces, compared to .75, the picture in the front is different, and it now comes with 36 papers which are packaged similar to Top papers. I like this better than the old pouch mainly because the taste of the tobacco. My previous pouch of bugler didn’t impress me much, but this new pouch isn’t bad. I should also mention the papers work, the last pouch I bought came with papers that refused to stick, but these are easier for me to roll, and they stick. My only complaint would be that the pouch is now .65 ounces. While Bugler won’t replace my Lookout, I will defiantly buy a pouch or tow every now and then.

I was at my local tobacconist picking up a few boxes of tubes and noticed that they had pouches of Bugler on special so I picked one up for old time's sake. Man oh man, I'm not sure what they're doing lately, but I think I found the missing fruity smell from McClintock FF...it's all in this pouch of Bugler! :-)

I've smoked Bugler now and again for a long time, and while it's always had the fruity aroma Dave mentions above, I don't recall it ever being this strong! I dumped the contents out and let it air out for a couple of hours and it was still just as powerful as when first opened. Has anyone else noticed this or did I just get a rogue? :-)

Yes, I noticed that afterwards, too... . Just for grins, I went back and bought another pouch to compare. It was just as powerfully fruity as the first. These are pouches marked as .65 oz, with this amount marked over and .78 oz added over it, stating "Free 20% more tobacco!" in a starburst on front. Luckily, the taste isn't fruity--but even after two days that first pouch still smells pretty strong.

I am wondering if the 20 percent "free" was BG, and it overpowered the rest of the regular. Maybe their new product has gone to their head and they want to force it on everyone. Like "New" Coke? maybe it's a secret test to see if it boosts sales of the standard.

Naw, plain old blue Bugler. I noticed this morning the smell has dissipated somewhat but there's a tiny hint of a note after exhaling that reminds me of the taste of a rum and coke that's sat out and gone flat--kinda sticky sweet. But just a hint on exhale. Weird.

Well, seeing as how I wanted to know if my olfactory mechanisms had gone haywire, I wandered over to the tobacco section of a local Wal-Mart and found an older pouch of Bugler. Brought it home, popped it open and no over-ripened fruity smell at all...just the good-old Bugler aroma I remembered. They gotta be doing something new... . I also donated one of the two "new" fruity Bugler pouches to a guy sitting out front bumming smokes.

Been sick, so I haven't smoked much for about 3 weeks. Before getting sick, I bought a pouch of BG and Reg. Bugler to make direct taste comparison.

I thought it was just me getting sick that made the reg Bugler taste so bad, but now I am certain it was the tobacco.
Still not completely over the chest cold and residual effects, but I tried one stick each of BG and reg B. The BG was smoother, but I didn't like the taste much. The reg B wasn't at all what I remembered and it is not my "in a pinch" tobacco anymore.
Yes, I did notice the strong fruity smell on both BG and RB. Lane LTD really screwed up here, IMHO. Why do companies mess with a good thing? Why not just make a new product and leave a winner alone!?!?

To me, regular Bugler comes much closer to a Camel than the new Gold variety. The Gold seemed to have cheaper tobacco and flavorings which I have always associated with cheaper tobacco. As Dave mentioned the Gold has a "fruity" smell which I attribute to the added flavorings.
The "turkish" didn't seem to come through as well in the Gold as in the regular.
If you can find the Gold locally in the pouch, I would try it that way first in case you don't like it.

I picked up a can of BG today at the local smoke shop. $6.99 + $2.29 for Bugler tubes. ~$1/pack after tax. Had a good taste right out of the can in a full flavor tube. let some dry a few minutes and made another. even better! I like this and the price is right. Stupid local store doesn't price any of the MYO/RYO products. they only price the premades and chewing tobacco's. that's the main reason i don't normally shop there.

Hey Scott, that's a good price for Bugler Gold! Here in Northern Ohio it's around $10.00 a can before taxes and tubes. I try to keep a can of this on hand, just because it is a nice smoke. In truthfulness though, just when I think I've found a tobacco that would be my daily favorite--I find I discover another tobacco that throws a wrench in-- Like Look Out Milde Shag! Mike

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Even though I already found a couple of favorite daily smokes and some that I like a few a day, I just can't seem to stop buying one more tobacco or tubes that i havn't tried. And there is a lot out there that I havn't tried yet. Bugler Gold I have tried and liked it better than the regular Bugler. It just seemed to have a better flavor than the regular and while not a daily smoke, is among one of the favorites and also awesome to mix in a little with other tobaccos.

I'll be smoking BG as my daily smoke at least until I get bored with it. To me it's alot smoother then the regular Bugler.

I will chime in also on this: To me the BG has less Turkish/Burley taste and must have more Virginia tobacco mixed in. It's more of a lighter taste (to me) than regular Bugler. I liked it, but I'll be buying more regular Bugler 'cause I use it as a base for some of my blends.

Thanks, Scott. I like the taste of Bugler in the main, but I'd like it better toned down a tad. I had blended soome regular Bugler one time with McCV and thought the result was interesting. Maybe it's time to just grab a can.

I ended up adding Ramback Turkish to this blend. The Gold seems to have less Burley than the regular Bugler. Yes, I enjoy this tobacco now and then, but tire of it quickly! I've smoked regular Bugler for years off and on. Bugler was my cross--over tobacco from Camels. Mike

I've had both the original and the gold this past week and these two are great to me. The original can be a tad strong for a day to day smoke, but still one of my favorites. The gold is mild, but with good flavor.

As for Bugler Gold, it's similar to the original, but, less harsh and tastes a bit more turkish. I think they added a little more turkish, which accounts for the change in smoothness and taste.
Bugler is an old full flavor sort of brand from yester year.

A company named Bellomy Research was running a test for a Bugler original replacement a couple months back. I was lucky enough to sample two different oz.s and get a $10 check. I wasn't impressed with the 1st batch but the 2nd was ok. (I wish they still used the old Brown & Williamson recipe.)
Bugler Gold is probably going to wind up as my go-to smoke when it comes to Bugler. I think it's better tasting and smoother than the current Bugler regular. I'll call it "regular" since "orignal" really doesn't apply. (I have a real love/hate thing with Bugler. My taste buds are fickle sometimes where Bugler tastes bad and sometimes it's all I'll smoke for a can's length of time.)

...and another thing. Bugler has replaced its old book style paper packs with new "EZ-Roll" papers in a dispenser style pack. These paper packs do not hold
115 papers without malfunctioning 1/2 way through. I always have to tear the whole pack open to manage the rest. I usually use my hands to roll but these papers are also a HAIR too long to work right in my little Gizeh roller. These new paper packs are @#$% through & through.

I really really enjoyed Bugler for a long time. But in the last couple of cans I have gotten (6 oz) along with the new design on it comes a new tobacco. It has really turned for the worst. I'm sorely disappointed in the company.

But even in chaos comes hope! People who are just starting there journey from premade cigs (Marlboro) would enjoy this tobacco.

Just picked up a can of Bugler Gold, and was surprised at the smooth, mellow taste. I have been smoking Bugler since 1992, and have been through the changes in quality Bugler has gone through with different owners of the trademark. My first can of Bugler Gold seemed to be a bit too moist, but is a definite improvement I think! The tobacco has a nice fragrance in the can--not near as heady as regular Bugler. It seems that someone is reading these SYO/RYO Forums from the big tobacco companies. Quite a delightful smoke! I still prefer Ramback, but when and if I run out at least for the time being-I'll grab a can of Bugler Gold!

This has a great aroma. Somewhat sweet from the Turkish and Virginia. The large amount of burley adds body and strength. The turkish is not very evident when it is smoked. About medium in nicotine. Plain,old fashioned type of smoke. It is smoother and more flavorful than Top. But for the money it is not up to par. Jester costs a little more but is far superior.

A very good old brand. A little too much burley for my tastes, but still a very good turkish blend.

Price is higher than it should be, but it is an old and very established brand. Try Midnight Special for a cheaper and very close tasting alternative. Both are from Lane LTD.

So, I've been trying something new every week. This week was Bugler, and it's not bad. It has the same Turkish taste as the Ramsback, but not as overpowering and oily. It's easier to blend with, because it's blended with American tobaccos already. These old brands continue to amaze me with their quality and flavor.

We use to buy bugler tobacco in a yellow can, wondering if anyone knows if it is still available, can't seem to find it anywhere. thanks,

I just saw Lil' Brown has Bugler Gold on it's site. Is this what you were looking for?
